As the oldest insurance agency in Shelby County, Rux Carter Insurance has been serving the needs of families and businesses in Central Alabama for over 100 years.

Today, we’ve certainly come a long way from the “log books” of the past. Our office is equipped with the latest technology that enables us to provide our customers with the coverage, programs and pricing necessary to protect their families and businesses.

Our agency was established in 1906 by Mr. J.R. White of Columbiana, AL. In 1947, a close family friend, Rux Carter, purchased and incorporated the agency and it has been “in the family” ever since. Mr. Carter previously worked for Liberty National Insurance Company. He was a very active member of the community having served as an original board member of Shelby Memorial Hospital (currently Shelby Baptist Medical). He was also the first president of the Columbiana Kiwanis Club.

After graduating college in 1970, George Bentley began working in the agency. In 1977, George purchased the agency from his father in law, Rux Carter, and has been the Agency principal since that time. George has been very active with the Alabama Independent Insurance Association having served as president in 1995/1996 and later became State National Director. In 1999 George was awarded the Independent Agent of the Year for the State of Alabama.

Rux Bentley joined the staff of Rux Carter Insurance Agency in 1994 becoming the third generation of his family to work in the agency. Rux received the Young Independent Agent of the Year award in 1998 and 2007 (the only agent in the history of the state to earn this award twice). He served as the chairman of the Alabama Young Agent’s Committee in 2000. In May of 2009 Rux will be inducted as the president of the Alabama Independent Insurance Association. This will mark the first that time in the State Association’s 100 year history that both a father and a son have served the AIIA as President.

In 2007, George’s youngest son Casey joined the family business after working 7 years with a National IT Services provider in Birmingham, AL and St. Louis, MO. Since coming on board, Casey has already received his Commercial Lines Coverage Specialist (CLCS) designation through the Hartford School of Insurance and completed a one year new producer program through State Auto Insurance called Pacesetters. Casey’s responsibilities will include an emphasis on Commercial and Personal Insurance.

Today, the staff at Rux Carter Insurance makes up well over 100 years experience in the insurance industry. We pride ourselves in making sure that our customers are treated like family. Our goal is to not to just sell insurance policies, but to develop true long lasting relationships with our customers. We are your local friends with many different choices.
